1. Wildlife Safari

For the daring and adventurous, a wildlife safari is a definite must! Head to Bandhavgarh or Kanha Tiger Reserves to capture the majestic tigers hunting prey in their natural habitat. Follow the trails of their paw marks and enjoy the thrill of this amazing journey.

High in the Indian Himalayas, near Ladakh, snow leopards can also be found. Or you could simply head over to Gujarat to Sasan Gir National Park and find Asiatic Lions. These species are rare and closely resemble their African counterparts.

Other great wildlife sanctuaries include Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve, Ranthambore National Park, Bandipur National Park, and many others that are home to exotic wildlife and include incredible sights.

2. Trek the Markha Valley, Ladakh

The Markha Valley, situated slightly south of Leh, is a wonderful getaway! Lofty peaks set against clear blue skies make for a serene sight, with the timeless villages in the backdrop adding to the charm of the scenery.

The Markha Valley and Hemis Festival treks are the most popular of the Indian Himalayan Treks. It starts in Ganda La, Leh, and takes around a week to complete. The Markha valley is home to the snow leopard (which can be visited in Hemis National Park) and the Hemis festival, which takes place in the Hemis monastery, the largest monastery in Ladakh and claimed to be a thousand years old.

3. Amazing train journeys

One of the oldest forms of transportation in India is a journey by train. It is affordable and yet offers you so much in terms of experience. Crowds throng the platforms and, though chaotic, once inside you experience a sense of peace as the journey moves ahead.

You can try the desert crossing from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, capturing forts and old cities in your wake. Or, take the toy train from Kolkata to Darjeeling if you prefer views of the tea plantations. The Cardamom route from Madurai to Bodinayakkanur takes you to the foothills of the Western Ghats past cotton, mango, pepper, tea, and coffee plantations.

For the die-hards, you can experience the longest train journey in India. The Grand Truck Express, which goes from New Delhi to Chennai, is all of 2186 km!

4. Desert diaries in India

Haven’t you always wondered what it would be like to cross a massive desert in the middle of nowhere? Try the Thar Desert in the mystical state of Rajasthan. The camel ride goes from the Thar Desert to Jaisalmer, and is an incredible experience! While you’re there, go to the Pushkar Camel Fair, which is as unusual as it gets, with the traders and their colourfully clad camels on display!

5. The Golden Temple, Amritsar

One of the most awe-inspiring sights you will find in India is the Golden Temple, also called Harmandir Sahib, meaning “abode of God” and or Darbār Sahib. This is situated in Amritsar, and millions of people from all walks of life visit this sacred place to seek blessings from a higher power.

The temple itself is made completely of gold. It is surrounded by a lake and looks very opulent. Here you are welcomed with open arms and invited to the Langar, a free Sikh community-run kitchen that serves a simple vegetarian meal to all visitors without discrimination. It is also home to many pilgrims, all having their own stories to share with you.
